QUESTIONS

Frequently

Here you will find some of our customers’ most frequently asked questions.

Should I choose magnesium, brass, or silicone for my hot foil stamping die?

Magnesium: Magnesium is the right choice when you are looking for a cost-effective die for standard, day-to-day foil stamping applications. Magnesium dies are less suitable for long production runs (approximately 50,000 impressions or more).
Brass: Brass is recommended for high-quality or demanding applications, such as designs with very fine lines,
stamping on uneven or textured substrates (for example leather, foil, or suede), or when long production runs are required.
Silicone: For hard substrates such as plastics, glass, and metal, a silicone die must be used. Thanks to the flexibility of silicone, it is possible to apply foil to hard materials without damaging the substrate.

Which type of die is the most sustainable?

From a sustainability perspective, brass dies are the best choice. Brass can be continuously reused, no chemicals are used during production, and our engraving machines operate on green energy.

How does Hermans determine the required engraving depth of an embossing die?

Magnesium embossing dies: Standard engraving depth of 0.65 mm, suitable for approximately 95% of applications.
Optional 0.85 mm depth can be compensated using make-ready materials to prevent cutting into the paper.
Brass embossing dies: Produced as fully custom solutions. Engraving depth is determined by paper weight, paper type, design detail, and desired embossing effect.
Softer papers allow deeper embossing, while harder or coated papers require adjusted depths to prevent cracking or cutting.
